Energy drink market booming

Mintel highlighted in its 2023 report, Energy Drinks  United States, that the loyalty of energy drink consumers has allowed the market to thrive.

Mintel experts said in the report: “Energy drinks remain a growing segment within the wider drinks industry, with growth attributed to loyal consumers in the core category and attraction to better-for-you energy drinks of new consumers. The energy drink space is filled with competitors, but energy drink brands can stay relevant by meeting consumers’ interest in health and wellness while responding to consumers’ changing energy needs.”

Despite strong support from loyal consumers, analysts note that new entrants to the category are helping to maintain strong results.

Mintel's report states: "A combination of loyal fans and newcomers to the category will drive market growth. The market benefits from favorable conditions such as low unemployment and changing demographics... This suggests that there are opportunities for energy drink brands to serve specific needs." Consumer interest in energy drinks has not waned, especially compared to other functional drinks. But some ingredients can also have side effects, so experts encourage consumers to pay attention to ingredients and monitor the intake of younger consumers.

Experts also note how health consciousness is impacting the energy drink category. This negative perception is expected to persist for five years, which is likely to slow consumption of more traditional energy drinks and more of consumers will seek to consume beverages with all-natural ingredients."
