The CDL end was designed by Container Development Ltd in response to the aluminum package market demands for a reduction in the consumption of aluminum without sacrificing strength and double seam performance.
Previously, most beverage ends were still derived from Alcoa's B64 design that evolved during the 1980's and 1990's into the familiar stay-on-tab end used today in some markets. Past light-weighting was achieved by diameter reductions from 206 through 204 to the 202 size that is almost universal for beer and beverage.
Critical to the CDL performance is a revised forming process and shell profile that enables a reduced blank size and metal gauge reduction from 0.0085 of an inch (0.216mm) to 0.0082 of an inch (0.208mm) while maintaining the ability to meet the internal pressure requirements of the leading soft drink and beer beverage customers.
Compared with the B64 aluminum cover, CDL is more lightweight and durable, so that the CDL aluminum cover can significantly reduce the overall weight during the packaging process, making it easy to carry and transport.
The Interchangeable SuperEnd beverage end represents an advancement of the original SuperEnd beverage end for the Asia Pacific region. As it can run on the same seamer tooling as other designs and make implementation easier, the technology has been licensed to international customers to enable them to leverage the innovation and meet their own sustainability needs.
